ALAN SCHOOL OF MOTORING
Motorway driving lessons. Planning your journey, using a road map, reading the overhead signs, joining the motorway, changing lanes, overtaking, safe separation distance, looking into the distance, being aware of traffic behind and effective use of mirrors. Use of signals, high sided vehicles, affects of cross winds, fatigue, taking breaks, emergencies, breakdowns, the hard shoulder, emergency telephone.
These are some of the topics covered in a two hour motorway driving lesson. It sounds and looks a lot but it really is easy to get used to. I have not met a pupil yet who did not enjoy a motorway lesson and at the end of the lesson they have all said they were ready to make a real journey on their own.
I often point out when we are on the M5 near Bristol that in about two hours you
could be on the south coast, Torquay perhaps. Or in about 20 minutes Weston-
Remember that mile for mile, motorways are the safest roads, no junctions, traffic lights, or pedestrian crossings, Just keep a good lookout for traffic hold ups ahead, and make sure you are aware of traffic all around you. You will be reminded about the importance of using all the mirrors. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. A two second time gap is probably enough in town, although I prefer more. On the motorway it is nowhere near enough. Keep safe, keep back.
The picture below (taken on the M5 near Bristol) is used to illustrate the importance of reading the overhead signs in good time and knowing where you are going, particularly in choosing the correct lane for your destination.
